Forest School
Forest School is a child-centred approach to learning that takes place in the natural environment, where children can explore, play, and connect with the world around them. It’s all about creating a safe, nurturing space where kids can lead their own adventures—whether that's building dens, climbing trees, spotting bugs, or making mud pies. The core values of Forest School include respect for the child’s voice, learning through play, and fostering curiosity, independence, and a deep connection with nature.
Child-led play is at the heart of Forest School. Rather than directing every moment, adults observe, support, and gently guide, allowing children to take the lead in their own learning journey. For children with special needs, this freedom can be incredibly empowering. It provides space for sensory exploration, reduces pressure, and honours different ways of communicating, engaging, and thriving. In the woods, children are free to be themselves—there’s no right or wrong way to play, which builds confidence, resilience, and joy.
Although it might seem like children are just playing, curriculum learning intentions are subtly woven into each session. From counting sticks to storytelling with pinecones, there are rich opportunities for maths, language, science, and social skills to emerge naturally. Activities are planned with flexibility in mind—focused on themes or skills, but always adaptable to follow the children’s interests. It’s this balance of freedom and intention that makes Forest School so magical, especially for those who might not flourish in a traditional classroom. Each week this page will be updated with images of the children enjoying different parts of Newlands Forest School.
