Curriculum - Reading

We love to read! Children have access to hundreds of books across school. We regularly share sensory stories in class or even create them! Everyone has their favourite book and is able to enjoy both fiction and non-fiction.

In addition to a focus on pre-reading skills for many children, we follow the  Read Write Inc Approach, and have made sure that the children have access to a wide range of colour-coded books.  We use the Read, Write Inc approach to phonics throughout the school.

As with all approaches in school, we make sure that we meet the needs of children as individuals, starting with what they can already do and building skills from that point. We also understand that many of our pupils are still developing the skills needed to access phonics activities and,  as with all learning at Newlands we concentrate on the skills the children need first.

Your child may bring home a book to read and share with you. We also have our Big Book Home Loan Scheme.  This means your child can borrow an oversized ('Big') book to share with you at home and read for pleasure.
