Our Learning
Maths
March 2026
This half term in maths, we have been learning all about patterns. The children have been recognising, continuing and creating their own repeating patterns using colours, shapes and objects. We have also been learning about “in” and “out”, where the children have been sorting objects and exploring positional language. Alongside this, we have continued developing our understanding of numbers to 5 by counting carefully, recognising numerals, matching quantities to numbers, and showing different ways to make numbers within 5. We are very proud of how confidently the children are applying their maths skills during both adult-led activities and independent activities.
Understanding The World
February 2026
This month, we have had a fantastic time celebrating Chinese New Year.
We learned about the traditions and celebrations of Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year. The children explored different decorations, discovered why the colour red is so important, and found out how families prepare for this special time of year. It sparked lots of curiosity and excitement in the classroom.
Alongside our celebrations, we have had a strong focus on maths, particularly exploring patterns. The children have been busy creating repeating patterns in a variety of fun, hands-on ways. We used coloured pasta and large building blocks to make simple repeating patterns using two colours, carefully thinking about what comes next and checking our sequences. Many of us were able to continue a pattern independently, and some even challenged ourselves to create our own!
We also got creative by painting our own dragons and using straws and other materials to design and make our very own dragon creations. The children were proud to share their colourful artwork and designs.
Our adults supported us in developing our fine motor skills by using tongs to search for items hidden in noodles. This activity linked wonderfully to our celebrations, as we talked about the traditions of different cultures and families, helping us to understand and appreciate the world around us.
Science
January 2026
This week, the Waves Class have been learning the nursery rhyme Old MacDonald Had a Farm. During their Understanding the World/Science lesson, the children engaged in imaginative role play within a farm setting. They closely observed what the animals and the farmer do, developing their understanding of life on a farm. The children also explored a sensory tuff tray filled with natural materials, where they noticed and discussed detailed features of objects found in a farm environment. This hands-on experience encouraged curiosity, sensory exploration, and observational skills.
Outdoor Education
December 2025
Waves Class have thoroughly enjoyed their recent bus trip to the local park. The children loved exploring their local area, noticing new places and sharing their excitement with friends. Throughout the visit, they practised taking turns and helping one another, showing kindness and teamwork in everything they did. Many children even challenged themselves to try activities they might not normally attempt, showing great confidence and resilience.
Autumn Term
November 2025
We have had such a wonderful Autumn Term in Waves Class, filled with new sensory experiences, connection, and many joyful moments of learning. One of our most exciting highlights was our very first mini-bus adventure to the park! Every child did amazingly well, and all the adults were incredibly proud of them.
Trips like this are especially valuable as they give children the chance to explore new surroundings at their own pace, experience different sights and sounds, and build confidence as they adapt to unfamiliar places. They also support independence, helping children feel secure while trying something new. During our visit to the park, there was rich and meaningful learning happening for every child.
From a Physical Development perspective, the children were wonderfully active—moving freely in their preferred way, climbing or exploring equipment, practising balance, and developing both gross- and fine-motor skills through movement, touch, and exploration of natural materials.
The outing also supported Personal, Social and Emotional Development. The children showed fantastic resilience and regulation skills as they coped with the journey, the new environment, and all the excitement that came with it. They shared space with others, took turns with gentle adult support, and celebrated each other’s successes. Many children showed growing confidence by trying activities that were new or challenging for them.
Understanding the World was enriched too, as the children connected with a real local place in a sensory and meaningful way. They noticed autumn leaves, listened to birds, felt the cold air, explored different textures underfoot, and recognised familiar sights from a new perspective. These real-world experiences help our children build awareness of their community and make links between what they see in school and what exists beyond it. Moments like these spark curiosity, support communication, and nurture a deeper sense of belonging and identity.
The children’s enthusiasm and confidence this half term have been truly inspiring. We can’t wait to build on this momentum with even more adventures, discoveries, and opportunities to help our Waves Class learners shine even brighter.
Settling In
September 2025
Waves Class have been busy settling into the new school year, exploring the different areas of the school and becoming familiar with their daily routines. They’ve enjoyed taking part in Forest School, where they’ve had the chance to connect with nature through outdoor learning and play.
Another highlight has been their PE sessions with Manchester City, where the children have been developing their physical skills, teamwork, and confidence through fun and engaging activities.
