Our Learning
Autumn 2
November 2025
Elm Class have had a wonderful term and have settled into our class routines really well. We are now able to sit for longer periods during circle time for greetings and the start of our lessons, which has helped us feel calm, ready and focused for learning.
In Maths, we have been focusing on counting and recognising numbers. We have recently started to explore money, looking at coins and beginning to use them in simple activities.
In English, we have been reading and exploring The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Jasper’s Beanstalk. We have been sequencing the days of the week and retelling the stories using pictures, signs and props.
In Phonics, we have been focusing on environmental sounds and learning one sound each week, taking part in fun activities related to that sound. We have also been using communication boards to help us make requests and have conversations, and we are getting really confident with this.
In Science, we have been learning about materials in our environment. We have been exploring different textures, such as rough and soft, and matching them to objects around us.
We have really enjoyed Food Technology, where we have been making foods from around the world and celebrating different cultures through cooking.
In Art, we have been exploring colour and investigating what happens when we mix two colours together. The children have loved experimenting and discovering new shades.
In P.E., we have been learning about our bodies through dance. We have been following action songs, moving in different ways, and dancing around the hall to a variety of music.
It has been a busy and exciting term in Elm Class, and we are so proud of everything the children have achieved!
Autumn 1
Settling in
September 2025
Over the past three weeks, the children have been busy settling into routines and enjoying lots of exciting learning opportunities. In Maths, they have had fun exploring number rhymes, sensory counting, and simple patterns through colours, sounds, and objects.
Our English focus has been The Gingerbread Man, which the children have loved exploring through sensory storytelling. Using puppets, water play, and gingerbread-scented trays, they joined in with repeated refrains and enjoyed engaging with the characters.
Creative activities have included ripping and collaging paper, experimenting with fabrics and textured trays, and expressing themselves through art and design. In Food Technology, the children have explored food textures, enjoyed flour play, and practised chopping soft fruit to build early cooking skills.
Phonics sessions have introduced the sounds S, A, and M through sound boxes, helping pupils build sound awareness in a playful and engaging way. In PSHE, the children have been developing personal care routines such as handwashing and brushing teeth, and they especially enjoyed calming pamper sessions with hand massages.
In Science, the children have been investigating minibeasts, while in PE they have practised balancing, climbing, and travelling in different ways. Life skills such as preparing snacks, using cups, and putting on coats have also been a key focus, encouraging independence. Communication sessions using symbols, visuals, and switches have supported choice-making, and in Music the children have enjoyed exploring instruments and joining in with Paul’s lively Friday sessions.
Alongside this, the children have loved spending time in the soft play and light room, as well as enjoying outdoor play on the bikes and seesaw. They are beginning to anticipate familiar songs and activities, and it has been wonderful to see their confidence and independence grow each day.
